Anyone tried inflatable kayak?
I’m a college student living in dorm, so I don’t have enough space for a hardshell boat, that’s why I’m thinking of getting a inflatable kayak.
Does it work well? Is it easy to leak? I’m overweight(6 feet, 200lbs)
Any input will be appreciated!
I use an inflatable kayak for both ocean and white-water kayaking. I have surfed in the ocean and gone on white-water up to class IV. Of course, I have taken special training with these boats and have even certified as a swiftwater rescue technician. I have also trained as a white-water rafting guide. I strongly urge getting proper training prior to using an inflatable kayak in more than class II/III whitewater, plus you should always go with a responsible group.
I have a vinyl boat for ‘fun’, class II water and playing around in the ocean. It is a Sevylor bought from Orange Torpedo Trips of Oregon, and it is a bit different than the ones bought in sporting-goods stores…heavier construction and self-bailing. It would be suitable for many recreational kayaking situations.
I have a ‘professional’ type two-person inflatable kayak that I use on more serious whitewater or for long river days. It is made of the same material that white-water rafts are made of. I advise checking out http://www.nrsweb.com/ (Northwest River Supplies) as a source for this type of boat, plus other river gear such as proper life jackets.
Any moving water is inherently dangerous. Lifejackets are essential and helmets should be considered. In an inflatable you are likely to swim rapids on occassion, so your swimming skills and comfort in the water should be at a solid level. Wilderness first aid and basic water rescue skills should also be learned.
I am very heavy, at over 300 lbs, and have not had problems with that.
The vinyl boats are susceptible to leaks and a good patch kit including a full roll of waterproof duct tape should always be carried! Avoid rivers with lots of overhanging trees or debri in the water. Be careful when portaging. That will prevent most problems of that sort.
Go with an experienced group a couple of times first, or take an introductory course from a local kayaking specialty store.
