Should I buy a kayak or a slat-bottom inflatable dinghy?
Hi! I am 23 and live near the Dorset coast in England. I spend a lot of time near the water and am a keen novice SCUBA diver, and I’ve recently become interested in photography and fishing.
I’d like to get out on the water a little way, primarily inland lakes and rivers but also a sport of coast-hugging. I’d like a small craft that I could fish from and take a few snapshots, as well as stowing my hiking gear so I could paddle out to pastures new for a bit of exploring.
Would a kayak (if so, what type?) or an inflatable dinghy be better? I’d have to stow it in my car boot or on the roof, and I am on a fairly tight budget. Thanks!

I own a 3 metre inflatable with a 3 piece plywood floor, it is made by Zodiac and I use a small outboard.
Easy to inflate and fits the car boot.
I have used it on rivers, lakes and in the sea as far apart as Northumberland and Devon.
It’s great fun as long as you don’t overload it. Stable enough for fishing and fun in the surf!
My son owns a kayak which he enjoys but it’s not as versatile as my inflatable.
