What do I need for an electric boat motor?
I just got a new blow up boat that can handle an electric trolling motor. Its the Intex Excursion 5 if you need to know, it is rated for 5 people. I have never had a boat, so I dont know about motors. My question is, what do I need to have a good set up as far as rechargeable batteries are concerned and what brands are good and affordable for both the motor and the battery. I will be out on windy lakes with my kids so I need to know I have a good power setup to get me back to shore! Thanks everyone!
When it comes to a trolling motor, invest in a decent one. Motorguide, MinnKota are both sure bets. Purchase a tiller steer in a poundage from 20-32 of more if you plan on battling winds with lots of weight in the boat. A short shaft of about 32in is more than adequate. Any 12v DEEP CYCLE battery can be used, and one from walmart would be substantial. You want one with a good reserve rating. It goes without saying you will need a deep cycle battery charger as well, charge it on 2amp to give a slow trickle charge for long lasting high power, or 15 amp for quick charge with little duration of power. With this all said, expect to be in the hole $200 for a trolling motor, $60-80 for the battery and about $30 for the charger.
