Speed on a dinghy?
I am looking at buying a 7.5′ dinghy (titan) inflatable keel.
With the dinghy comes a 2 stroke 6 H.P Johnson motor.
The total load in the boat will be about 500 lbs. 2 occupants
gas gear and some cargo. If the weight is evenly distributed what sort of speed can I get? I am traveling a fair distance up a river with strong current and do not want to underpower the boat. Is this HP sufficient, the boat is only rated for a 5 HP max.
I wouldn’t expect more than 10mph, tops. You’re pushing that boat’s capacity with people and gear, and you’ve already stated you’re overpowering.
That little engine probably won’t get that boat on plane, not with that heavy a load. You’d do much better with a 10-12′ jonboat and a 10hp motor – that would hit over 20mph and plane very nicely with the same load.
Your fuel usage will be pretty high for the distance covered since you won’t be able to get to top speed. Try this: when first starting, have the bow passenger shift rearward just a bit to get the bow out of the water – perhaps, if the bow isn’t plowing so hard, you could actually get it to plane and then you could make some serious headway. If you can do that, you may be able to break 15mph, but it’s iffy.
