What are some good tips for launching a large boat with a 2 wheel-drive truck?
My boat and trialer weigh around 8500 pounds loaded up with water and gas. My truck is a 2 wheel-drive 3/4 ton truck that pulls the boat very well. I just bought the boat and went out last weekend with the company I bought it from. We used their truck to do the launching and I towed it home.
I’m going out to Newport Beach, CA this weekend to launch and I’m worried my back end is going to slip all over the place.
What can I do to prevent this? I heard putting carpet down can help. Scrubing the ramp down too might help.
I need some good advice please. I’ve never launched a boat this big before.
Those can be helpful.
Some other way to improve traction would be first to ease the throttle, don’t hit it hard. You will be more likely to break loose if you do that.
You might want to air down the tires a bit to increase tire “give” and traction.
Another trick that works if you have an open differential (non-locking or non-posi trac rear end) is to disconnect the trailer brakes from the truck if equipped with trailer brakes (only while you are pulling the boat out of the water). And gently power brake the truck as you pull it out. the idea ia to add artificial resistance (traction) to the tire with the least traction since it will be the one most likely to brak loose and spin. If you leave the trailer brakes hooked up you will just create useless drag when you press the brakes and worsen the situation. If you do not want to unplug the trailer you can use the parking/emergency brake to accomplish the same effect. The parking brake will only grab the rear brakes and add that resistance to keep you from really breaking loose the rear end on one side and you will not be adding any drag to the rest of your rolling assembly. This is a technique used by many off road drivers when you are in a situation where you do not have a locking differential or your locking differntial fails.
