How do you figure out whether a ring is aromatic, non-aromatic, or anti-aromatic? Specifically if its planar?
I know about huckel’s rule and that it the structure has to be planar, but how do you know its planar and not in a boat configuration?
Don’t worry much about if the ring is planar or not. If it is aromatic, the resonance structure will force the ring to become planar since the planar ring can have the most probability to share the pi electrons in the ring.
For example, cylohpentadiene is envelop-like but cyclopentadienyl anion which fits to Hukel’s rule is planar.
Most of the compound that fits the Huckle’s rule are aromatic.
Cyclooctatetraene has 8 pi electrons and have boat configuration configuration, of course, it is not aromatic.
Only Cyclodecapentaene fits the Huckel’s rule (ie 10 pi electrons) but is not aromatic because the steric hindrance of 5-H and 10-H make it not plannar.
