How do I set up an inflatable boat with a motor and what all do I need?
I am interested in boating. I always thought it would be impossible thinking boats were closer to thousands of dollars. Way out of my price range. Low and behold, late one night, I found on Amazon Inflatable boats! Great! So I have been trying to figure out what I need. Most of them come with paddles. I’d also like a motor. What do I need to set up a motor? How do you power the motor?? Do I use a battery charger? Which one/type? I’ve been looking at the transom trolling motors, but for the life of me I can figure out how I would work it. Do I just attach it and Voila the boat runs? Or do I need to do….. ??
I think I would like to go with an electric motor. I dont think the inflatables can use the gas powered. Plus I think those are too expensive.
Can anyone walk me through what I would need for an Inflatable boat, using a transom trolling motor? Or any good sites where I can learn myself.

You’re right about needing an electric motor. The light duty inflatables like you found on Amazon can’t support anything too heavy or powerful, so that eliminates the option of a gas motor. What you’re going to need is a trolling motor. Take a look at the ones here:

These are Minn Kota Endura motors, and they are basically the standard that everyone uses. For your inflatable you’ll probably only want the 30 lb thrust model, as the others can get too heavy. Now, since it’s electric, don’t expect to be able to travel at fast speeds like a gas motor. I just purchased one for my 12′ Intex Excursion (highly recommended, by the way) and it works great! At full speed it really pushes you along at a decent pace and is very, very quiet.
The boat that I got, as well as the Sevylor inflatables, are made to attach a motor mount which can be purchased on Amazon or through the manufacturer. It’s basically a block of wood that attaches to the back of the boat that gives you a place to attach the motor to. It’s easy to install, and the motor is easy to hook up – just attach the wires on the motor to the correct +/- terminals on the battery and you’re good to go!
As for a battery, you will need to get a marine deep cycle battery. It looks like a car battery. You can find them at Walmart or automotive stores like Autozone. Make sure you get a DEEP CYCLE or DUAL PURPOSE marine battery, and not a marine starting battery. The latter is used for gas motors to power them when starting, but won’t last if used constantly. Deep cycle batteries are made to last long and also made to be drained down without being damaged. The battery will be heavy, around 50 lbs, so it’s definitely a little awkward in an inflatable, but that’s life.
You will need a battery charger, which you can also pick up in the car battery section at Walmart. The more expensive ones you buy, the faster they charge. If you’re only planning on taking the boat out once a week or so, then you can get a cheaper charger since you don’t need to use the battery soon afterward. Just remember to charge the battery as soon as possible after using it to maintain maximum life.
