repairing my 14′ inflatable RIB?
i have a 14′ alliance rigid inflatable. ive had it for about a year and im getting it all pretty. im preparing to paint it but i have a little problem with the size everywhere, tuffcoat, inlandmarine, westmarine, pettit. all these places only sell the top coat and base coat as a quart and tuffcoat recommends a thinner called xylene. will a quart cover all of my pontoons or will i get stuck with not enough paint and have half a boat painted each place says it will cover different size boats one says only an 8 foot dingy another says they covered a 12′ RIB and another said only a 10 foot boat
You go by the square metre coverage – square foot in some countries. To calculate this is pretty straight forward, and to expect a litre of top coat to cover more than the area the manufacturer claims is foolish. The thinner is whatever the label says – any two pack coating is toxic and should be treated with great caution. The more solids in a coating then generally the further it will cover to the correct film thickness. Stretching the coating is false economy, and will result in failure of the cured finish.
This assumes some basic trade ability of the applicator, and that the chosen coating will be applied as per the maker’s requirements. To expect to paint a boat fully with one litre of paint is pretty keen – while some coatings can cover 16m2 per litre, you might need two or three coats at a minimum.
