how do you properly row a canoe with two people?
I went canoeing yesterday with my lady and it was a great time but i couldnt seem to figure out why her dad asked us why there was a little bit a water in the canoe? When i was rowing i would paddle twice on one side and then switch to the other side of canoe and row that side to keep canoe straight. Are you not supposed to switch sides with the oar? and if so then why is it that when we row together the boat turns so much? I really want to know if it wrong to switch sides when rowing and row on one side then switch to the other. also we were using one small paddle and one large paddle cause im big and shes tiny.trying to figure out who is an idiot me or the old man
You’re basically correct.
While some purists will insist on paddling on one side, most people alternate their stroke to steer.
Here’s what you do:
First, the heavier person should sit at the stern of the canoe. To have a heavy person up front, makes it very difficult to track the canoe straight. It is also the stern paddler that actually steers the boat, not the forward paddler.
The forward paddler paddles on one side only, switching sides occasionally for comfort. The stern paddler will switch sides as necessary to maintain the track.
I’ll bet you were using the “Big” paddle and your lady was using the “Small” paddle, weren’t you. You’re simply overpowering what she’s doing at the front. Your paddles should at least be the same size and I’ll be if you had a smaller paddle, it would still work just fine.
The last thing to watch for is when the bow is about to come across the centerline. To switch your paddle over after the bow has come across is a little too late. By switching a stroke or so sooner, you’ll cut down on a lot of the yawing in you track.
Don’t worry about a bit of water in the boat… it comes with the territory. Hope you have fun.
