CREW (ROWING): How can you tell who’s not pulling in the boats?? Or who’s making the boat not set?
i’m a novice on a crew team. soo i have two questions..
1) when in a four, we have a really big problem with keeping the boat set. it constantly leans toward my side (starboard) and rocks back and forth a lot..i try to make my hands higher, but it doesn’t help much and my oar blade just drags on the water. also, i always find myself getting my blade stuck at the finish..so it’s easier for me to catch a crab. does that mean my stroke is longer? or i’m not pulling hard enough?
2) how can you tell who’s not pulling hard enough in an 8 and/or 4? someone on here said you can feel it..but i can’t tell.. i am always one of stroke pair seats.
Make sure everyone is sitting straight in the boat, no leaning to one side or the other. Have port side concentrate on pulling through a little lower to help get it off of starboard. You may want to try finishing a little earlier, don’t let the oar hit your chest, give yourself room to extract the oar from the water. Also remember to push down on your handle with your outside (right) hand at the finish and get the oar out of the water before you feather with your inside hand.
You can watch rowers puddles to judge how hard they are pulling, but remember bow pairs puddles are going to be a lot smaller (especially in an 
by the time they get to the stern pair, so you cant directly compare their puddles as you see them with the ones that just left your oar.
