1. A rancher has 100 m of fencing to enclose two adjacent rectangular corals. The rancher wants the enclosed area to be 350 square m. What dimensions should the rancher use to obtain this area?
2. An open box is to be made from a square piece of material by cutting two cm squares from the corners and turning up the sides. The volume of the finished box is to be 200 cubic cm. Find the size of the original piece of material.
3. An equilateral triangle has a height of 10 inches. How long is one of its sides?
4. A winch is used to tow a boat to a dock. The rope is attatched to the boat at a point 15 ft below the level of the winch.
a) Use the Pythagorean Theorem to write an equation giving the relationship between the two sides.
b) Find the distance from the boat to the dock when there is 75 ft of rope out.

lw = 350 or w = 350/l
3l + 2w = 100 (the rectangles are adjacent, therefore share 1 side, so you only need fencing for 3 lengths)
3L + 2(350/L) = 100
3L + 700/L = 100
3L^2-100L +700 = 0
(3L – 70)(L – 10) = 0
L = 10 or L = 70/3, therefore W = 35 or 15
