Do you need a boat certificate for a small inflatable boat?
We are planning to buy a small, inflatable boat – this is the first boat we will be buying, but we heard somewhere that we will need a boat certificate. Is that true? I mean, it IS an inflatable boat… If so, where can we get one (on Long Island) and how much does it cost! Thanks!!!

Here are the requirements for boat registration in the State of New York:

It does not appear that your inflatable rafts need to be registered since they are non-motorized.
But even though you don’t have to register them you still have to have PFD’s (life vests) and you should check with Coast Guard regulations if you had plans to take it out in the Sound or offshore. There are restrictions on taking these cheap inflatables outside inland or sheltered waters because they are so easily swept out by currents and wind and people find themselves unable to get back to shore. Honestly, these boats are NOT safe for ocean waters. They are strictly for small ponds and shallow, quiet streams.
