Deep cycle battery life vs LB Thrust?
I’m trying to get a grasp on how the lb thrust of a trolling motor will consume battery life.
I have purchased the Intex Excursion 5, 12′ inflatable boat, I’m going to get the bigger deep cycle battery from DicksSporting Goods $129. but i’m not sure if it would be more efficient to get the 30lb or 45lb MinnKota troller to push it with.. seems there is a significant speed difference.
Will the higher thrust get me there faster and leave me more time fishing, or will a 30lb get me there slower and save battery power giving me more time fishing…

I can tell you that I personally have a 10 foot plastic boat, a cheap Interstate deep cycle battery, and a 45 pound thrust Minn Kota motor. I have enough battery life to last me a few days of fishing without any issues, and I do use the trolling motor a lot throughout my days of fishing. The place that I use this boat at most of the time sits in a big and open area, so wind is a constant thing here, which is why I use the motor a lot. Also, I’m sure this boat outweighs your inflatable by quite a bit. I’m sure your 130 dollar battery is nicer than mine as well. Point being, if I can get a few days of fishing in on one charge, you should be able to get even more use out of your setup. I will say, though, when I bought my battery, I was told to not let the battery die all the way. The guy told me that keeping the battery always 25-50 percent charged will increase the life of it. I’m not sure if that is a necessary thing to do, but I have done it with mine.
Like Dumdum said, if you choose a 40-45 pound thrust motor, there isn’t really any sense in using the motor at full blast constantly. This will greatly increase your battery life. Just using the motor at 20-40 percent all day will do you just fine with a motor of that size. Most motors actually have a small chart on them somehwere or another with average times that a motor can be used with a standard deep cycle battery, at all different speeds. Mine says something like:
Level 1 speed – 12 hours
Level 2 speed – 10 hours
Level 3 speed – 8 hours
Level 4 speed – 6 hours
Level 5 speed – 4 hours
Of course, different batteries will alter these averages, but it gives you a basic idea when using it with a basic deep cycle battery.
