I’m having a little word problem problems ?
Okay, so I have a test tomorrow and right now I’m studying for it, but I don’t know how to work out some of the word problems, so if you can solve and explain your answer that’d be bunches of help!
1) Gretchen paddles a canoe upstream at 3mi/h. Traveling downstream, she travels at 8mi/h. What is Gretchen’s paddling rate in still water and what is the rate of the current?
2) Six years ago, Joe Foster was two years, more than five times as old as his daughter. Six years from now he will be 11 years more than twice as old as she will be. How old is Joe?
3) How many kilograms of nuts worth $5/kg should be mixed with 6 kg of nuts worth $9/kg to produce a mix worth $6.50/kg?
4) On a jury there are 3 fewer men than twice the number of women. If there were 2 more women on the jury, the numbers of men and women would be equal. How many men are on the jury?

x + y = 8 downstream

2x = 11
x = 5.5 <== Gretchen's paddling rate
y = 2.5 <==rate of the current

6 yrs ago 6 yrs from now (12 years later)

5x + 2 Joe's age. . . . . .5x + 14
x . . . daughter's age . . . x + 12
Since 6 years from now he will be 11 years more than twice as old as she will be, then:
5x + 14 = 2(x + 12) + 11
5x + 14 = 2x + 35
3x = 21
x = 7
6 years ago the daughter was 7 and Joe was 37.
Now Joe is 43. <==ANSWER
3) How many kilograms of nuts worth $5/kg should be mixed with 6 kg of nuts worth $9/kg to produce a mix worth $6.50/kg?
5x + 9(6) = 6.50(x + 6)
5x + 54 = 6.50x + 39
1.5x = 15
x = 10
Mix 10 kg of $5/kg nuts with 6 kg of nuts worth $9/kg to produce a mix worth $6.50/kg. <==ANSWER
4) On a jury there are 3 fewer men than twice the number of women. If there were 2 more women on the jury, the numbers of men and women would be equal. How many men are on the jury?
M = 2W - 3
M = W + 2
2W - 3 = W + 2
W = 5
M = 7
There were 5 women and 7 men. <==ANSWER
