What is the price range for an antique wooden tennis racket?
I recently found a pair of very old wooden rackets and I’m kind of curious about their worth and exactly how old they are. Any website with a catalog would be super helpful!
I can give some things to look for so you won’t get ripped. For the most part, there is not a real big market for old rackets. But sometime its nice to know you have something rare.
First thing is the condition: Is the frame badly warped…is the wood splitting?(water damage)
Is the trim work still intact? Are the string still in the frame?…are they broken?…badly worn? If there is a grip is it the original?…is it badly worn?
Next is to determine just how old. If it does not have a grip and there are grooves in the handle area etched in the wood itself then you have one of the earliest form of tennis rackets. Depending on condition these are usually worth more. These frames were made before leather was wrapped around the handle area. Now what may be present is a small piece of leather at the very bottom of the grip area about a half inch wide wrapped all the way around, tacked in two places with small brass tacks. This made sure the racket didn’t go flying out of someones hand. Before the leather band was used, the handle was flanged in the wood. If you have one of those, that means your racket was made prior to the 1890′s! These rackets were strung with sheep intestine and very early, piano wire.
Later rackets will have full leather grips, which took over around 1930 and more painted artwork and trimming.
The rackets that will be worth more at least historically is who manufactured the racket and who won championships with that model? Wright & Ditson, Spalding, Peck and Snyder are just some of the early manufactures. These rackets will be marked and or stamped along the shaft and under the butt of the racket. Some are even endorsed by players and will have their names on the racket. Like “Sears” for 7 time US Open winner Richard Dudley Sears.
