I need help with intial pool startup!?
We just bought an intex above ground pool. We had the fire department fill it up, and the water that they filled it up with was very dirty. I have never owned a pool and I am comepletely lost as to how to get it clear and ready for swimming. We bought the start up chemical kit (stablized tablets, shock, and test strips) but I have no idea where to start. The water is so dirty. I have put the shock in, but it is not any clearer. We are also trying to vacuum it, but it doesn’t look any better. Help please!!
Oh you poor dear! First of all don’t panic. And TOSS the pool test strips. They are JUNK! and won’t give you an accuarte reading. If you do one thing, that is spend money on a good test kit. And learn what proper water chemistry is. VERY EASY to learn and understand. I have a 27′ AGP and use the BBB method (ultra bleach, baking soda and mule team borax) and our pool is sparkling.
You need to check your chem levels. In particular
Chlorine level- (you want a free cholorine level of 2-6ppm for optium germ killing protection and to keep alage from taking hold.)
pH level 7.2-7.8 for most pools
Total Alkalinity of 40-120 ppm for most pools
and CYA levels. (ALL THE ABOVE is also based on your CYA level this is what keeps your chlorine from disappearing and being eatten by sunlight) Hence the reason for a very good test kit.
