How can we get from Dubrovnik to Budva (or anywhere on the coast in Montenegro) via boat?
We don’t have very long – only 2 or so days, to get from Dubrovnik to Montenegro and back again. Then we are heading up to Ljubliana in Slovenia. If anyone knows how to get up there with boat and train/bus that would be great also! Can you recommend companies / ferries and websites?
Let me just add that given its coastal, mountainous location, there are no trains in and out of Dubrovnik.
Alternatives such as ferries or boats are usually only offered by cruise companies and you couldn’t use their service only for transfer. Even Jadrolinija, the biggest sea operator in the area doesn’t offer regular ferries. It says you have boats in high season, but that’s also not very dependable.
This leaves you with the bus or taxi transport. There are not a lot of public buses from Dubrovnik to Montenegro in general.
See http://www.libertasdubrovnik.com/polazak.html there are several buses daily to Budva, Kotor etc. It will cost you about 20 euros one way, and it should take 3hours. Public road transport around Croatia and Montenegro is very good and reasonably priced and buses do indeed leave only once per day from major cities to other destinations. There are alternatives including catching a bus to a city beyond the Montenegrin border, Herceg-Novi, from where you could then catch a local bus into Budva. The fare price on connecting buses to Budva is around 4 euros for a forty kilometer ride. I know it sounds complicated, but it’s not really. Even if nobody spoke English, which is very unlikely, all you need to do is show the name of the city you wish to reach to any bus driver and they’ll point you to the correct platform, etc. All bus drivers collect fares on the bus—in Euros if in Montenegro and Kuna if in Croatia—so it doesn’t matter if the bus station is already closed. The final destination is Ulcinj near the Albanian border, so Ulcinj is the name most likely to appear in timetables, and Budva is on the way.
You can also take the taxi, but this can be expensive, minimum 80 euros one way….You can find out about Dubrovnik taxis at
