the commercial aluminium plate can be adoperated for boats construction or need the marine grade? .expensive!!?
I would like to make a small rowing Skiff in lapstrake construction. I want to use aluminium 2mm instead of plywood.People suggest “Marine Grade” but, it’s really not in my budget. What is I use the commercial quality and protect it with epoxy paint?
If you are substituting alloy plate for plywood it will not be cheap. The result will not be better than the ply version – the designer will re-draw the plans to suit the alloy material.
Using less than marine rated alloy is foolish as the materials costs are a very small amount of the overall cost in real terms.
The least useful alloy to use on a boat is aircraft grade – it will be the most subject to corrosion of all the alloys. Due to the inclusion of re-cycled materials in commercial sheet you will find quality variable, and while you can coat alloy with all sorts of materials – it will last better if you understand the self preserving nature of the oxidised natural surface. That is why commercial boats use a natural finish – it last longer and any issues are not masked by a coating. If you include the cost of 2 pack products you might as well just buy the good stuff in the first place. The quality of your welding and building method will have much more to do with how long your boat lasts even if you do choose quality materials….
