Aluminum canoe–Does anyone know the best way to prep and paint it? What about the wooden paddles?
I just inherited a 15 ft aluminum canoe with wooden paddles. The paddles are in pretty good shape, just need a little tlc. What little paint is left on the canoe is faded, and there is none at all left on the bottom. What is the best and cheapest way to repaint? I am sure I will need to sand and prime first, but no idea what the best products would be.
If it was previously painted, it will need to be repainted. The aluminum skin was probably not anodized which would have been sufficient corrosion resistance. You’re right to remove all old paint and sand any corrosion areas. Clean the surface afterward. The primer should contain a “chromate”–Zinc chromate or Magnesium chromate, etc. After the primer is allowed to cure sufficiently, proceed with painting. You can easily get information on paint recommendations on the net–Tnemec, Sherwin-Williams, etc.
