What is the Danger of Vinyl?
I have read a couple of comments lately about the “dangers of vinyl/pvc.” The only reference I could find was a 2000 PBS Bill Moyers Special (which makes it already suspect), which seemed to only be concerning vinyl in the manufacturing process. It is likened to DDT and Silent Spring (Bill Moyers, again…)
So, what I would like to know is, what exactly is the danger? Is it only a problem for manufacturers, or will my kid’s inflatable pool or my Wife’s raincoat be coming to destroy our livers, etc? What is being alleged here? Is it only if the vinyl is melted?
Is this a real danger, or is it like DDT and Silent Spring? I can only find one reference, and that was not a reliable source.
It takes a lot of noxious chemicals to produce any plastic, and PVC is certainly no exception. Also, I have been reading some similar articles as you regarding the overall health risks of all plastics, and the effect they or their residues have on the human body (fertility, obesity, etc.), not to mention on the environment. It’s kind of alarming, but seems pretty sensationalist and baseless.
If there were a genuine, quantifiable danger to PVC, it would have probably stopped being used years ago for records, car dashboards, drinking water pipes, gloves, medical tubing, and any of the other multitude of applications it’s good for.
I don’t think there’s much danger to it in the every day world.
