TIPS on removing Blue/Green from Scuba Diving Photos?
Many of my deeper scuba diving photos are too blue/green to really see the colour of the fish/coral photographed on a 12M digital camera. Any tips on editing these colours? Have seen adobe photoshop can sharpen them up to some extent but still not great? Any miracle workers out there who have already discovered this path?
If you’re resorting to fiddling with the photos in Photoshop, you could try increasing the red and/or decreasing the blue and green components, but this will only adjust the colour information that is already there, it won’t create new information. Sorry, but there are no miracles. If you want your pictures to have more red in them, you need to get more red in them to start with.
The most common cause of blued-out photos is excessive distance from the subject, so the best remedy is to be closer in the first place. Think back to your Open Water course, where you learned that red colours disappear in the first 4-5 m (12-15 ft) below the surface. This is due to the red light being absorbed/scattered, and this effect is proportional to the amount of water through which the light must travel, i.e. the effect applies horizontally as well. Even if you use a flash/strobe, being 2 m (6 ft) from your subject means the light has to travel 4 m (12 ft) from the flash to the subject and back to the lens–so any subject at this or greater range is likely to appear blue and washed out.
You should aim to position yourself no more than 1 m (3 ft) from your subject, and preferably less. If you have difficulty getting this close while still avoiding collision, then you need to take some time (i.e. dives, either in open water or a pool) to practice your buoyancy control. For photography more than just about any other underwater activity, buoyancy control needs to be second nature, so that you can manoeuvre yourself into position to get the shot(s) you want, and then away again without knocking chunks off the environment with your fins or equipment.
