Should I Get the V8 or V6 Explorer?
So I’m looking at first cars and currently i’ve found at 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 with 76,000 miles for $11,990 so ill be taking a look at it over the weekend. But I originallyy was looking for a V8 Eddie Bauer, I’m not sure if I should just settle or wait for that V8. I hear the V6s have alot of problems, and im not sure if it will have enough power, (Possibilityty of towing a 20ft Grady White Boat) I know Opionions, Thanks!
Actually both of them have their share of problems but if it were me I would get the V8. The V8 would definitely have more power for towing the boat and I always say you can not have too much power. One thing to watch for would be to see if it has the Ford Motor craft ignition coils on it. You can tell because they have Ford stamped on the top of them where it is east to see. If it does you can plan on replacing them soon because they have a design flaw in them and they cause misfires and need to be replaced frequently. There are 8 of them and cost around $50.00+ each so that will be at least $400.00 if you change them yourself. I suggest getting the MSD or Accel super coils for it because they give the engine more spark to work with and makes the engine more efficient and have more power. Some of the other problems with the truck were factory recalls and if you take the VIN number to a Ford dealer that has a service garage they can look the vehicle up by the VIN number to see if all of the recall work has been done to it, The recalls were things like the cruise control wiring and other electrical problems. The dealer can tell you all of the recalls that the vehicle had and you can actually look them up yourself by Googleing the VIN. Make sure that you drive the truck for at least 15 minutes before you buy it also so that if the engine computer has been cleared any trouble codes that may be wrong with the truck will turn the check engine light on. You want to do that to any vehicle you are looking at because there are shady people and shops out there that will clear the codes and sell the vehicle knowing that there is an issue. What I usually do if they want to ride with me is I start the vehicle and walk around it and check to be sure the tires are full, Then turn the lights on and walk around it again making sure that they all work, Then i turn the hazard lights on and walk around again looking it over making sure to take my time because they like to hurry you into getting back to the lot after you leave. It helps to talk with them while you are wasting time, But the important part is to leave the vehicle running while you are doing all of that so that when you are driving the light will come on if there is a problem.
I have had the light come on while I was test driving several cars and it has saved me piles of money to get it fixed because as soon as that light comes on they get embarrassed and tell you that they will make sure that they have that fixed. When they say that you win. Hope I have been helpful.
