Why is my thumb hurting so badly after kayaking?
I took my kayak out today for the first time & paddled for 3 hours in calm lake waters. As I was out on the water, I noticed my right thumb was becoming raw from the oar & figured after awhile I’d get used to that as a consequence of the sport & it would become less annoying after several outings. Also, I’m right-handed & understand that I will use that side more aggressively when rowing, thus risking blisters & such, but when I got home my thumb began to feel different. The rawness of the skin between my thumb & fore-finger had all but dissipated but, now my thumb is extremely sore & slightly swollen. Could I have pulled something w/out knowing it? I’m so new to the sport that I have no idea if this is normal.
Hello, it could be a bit of repetitive strain on your thumb joint through gripping the paddle shaft too tightly. Try to have a relaxed hold of the paddle and flex your fingers and thumb on a regular basis. The skin eventually toughens up and blisters will soon be a thing of the past.
